CHI 2026

From April 13–17, students and faculty of the doc.hci team attended the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2026, which took place in Barcelona, Spain.

CHI brought together researchers, practitioners, and students from across the international HCI community. For the doc.hci team, the conference offered a valuable opportunity to engage with current research, exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world, and take part in inspiring discussions on the future of human-computer interaction.

Poster “Playful Frictional Design: A Design Space Grounded in Playfulness, Friction, and the Everyday”

Doc.hci PhD student Nathalia Campreguer França presented a poster that proposes a design space that uses play design as a strategy to transform friction-induced conflict into constructive confrontation in everyday life. The poster was written in collaboration with her supervisors Alina Itzlinger, Bernhard Maurer, and Christopher Frauenberger. The accompanying article and a short online presentation are available at the ACM Digital Library here.

Workshop “Next Steps for Augmented Reality On-the-Move: Challenges and Opportunities”

As part of the conference program, doc.hci student Eleni (Helen) Stefanidi organized the workshop “Next Steps for Augmented Reality On-the-Move: Challenges and Opportunities” which took place on Thursday, April 16. The international organizing team also included fellow doc.hci student Jan-Hendrik Sünderkamp, as well as her supervisors Alexander Meschtscherjakov, Markus Tatzgern and Alina Itzlinger.

The workshop brought together researchers working on augmented reality, mobile interaction, and interaction in dynamic real-world contexts. Throughout the day, participants engaged in many interesting discussions about what interaction on-the-move should look like, which challenges arise when designing for mobile and everyday settings, and how these challenges can be addressed in future research and design.

Overall, CHI 2026 was a great experience for the doc.hci team, combining exciting research, international exchange, and many opportunities to connect with the wider HCI community.
